Washington sportscasting legend George Michael has died from cancer, according to NBC4 News Washington, his former employer.
He was the station's sports anchor from the early 1980s until 2007, when he left the station amid cutbacks.
"George Michael was our friend and colleague for more than 25 years," a station spokesman said Thursday morning. "He was a dynamic force around our newsroom and in the entire Washington area."
Michael reportedly was 70.
Mr. Michael also hosted the popular "George Michael Sports Machine" show, on which he, former pro athletes and reporters held spirited discussions about the Redskins and other area sports teams.
"George was a pioneer in sports broadcasting," the spokesman also said. "He was a gifted interviewer, a master storyteller and one of the hardest-working journalists out there. Our hearts go out to his wife, Pat, and his daughter, Michelle, both of whom also worked with us for many years, as well as the rest of his family."
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder called Michael "the consummate reporter and a valuable friend."
"I doubt we'll ever again see a sports reporter who was so admired by the people he covered," Mr. Snyder said. "He loved his family, he loved sports, and he loved his work. His wife, Pat, and the rest of his family are in my prayers, and in the thoughts of the entire Redskins organization."

Blunt doctor gets in trouble BY SARAH AVERY - Staff Writer
RALEIGH -- Dr. Earl Sunderhaus, an Asheville eye doctor, has what might charitably be described as a brusque bedside manner.
That much is not in dispute.
But the N.C. Medical Board may decide Sunderhaus overstepped the bounds of decency when he recently told a patient she was irresponsible for being unemployed, on Medicaid, and relying on taxpayers to cover another pregnancy after giving birth less than a year earlier. What really galled her, the patient complained, is that Sunderhaus poked her thigh and told her she is fat.
"When I got home I was very upset about the way I was treated by him," the patient wrote in a private complaint to the board. Efforts to contact the patient were not successful.
Sunderhaus, who describes himself as a plain-spoken old German, escalated the conflict by writing the patient to drive home his points using numbered paragraphs and signing it "sincerely." ~linkage
Ok, ok, I'll admit I laughed at the idea of dude writing her a letter and signing it sincerely. Like really? That's fucked up, but it's kinda funny. That said, two thoughts come to mind: 1. Hugh Laurie should use this guy for taking his persona. 2. I really hope he loses his license. WTF
Actually three thoughts. 3. I know doctors that while not quite as vile as this dude are mad crass in a similar way. I'm glad this is being highlighted. Because it's not ok.

DC chief slams officer over gun at snowball fight
By NAFEESA SYEED (AP) – 2 days ago
WASHINGTON — The city's police chief slammed a veteran detective Monday for pulling a gun during a mass snowball fight that had been advertised on Twitter.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said she watched video clips from the confrontation and has no doubt the off-duty detective pulled his gun after snowballs hit his personal car during Saturday's record snowfall.

So, blackfolk, what do we think the consequences should be for a veteran officer who pulls out his gun on a group of people for throwing snowballs at his car?

By ERRIN HAINES, Associated Press Ann Nixon Cooper, the Atlanta centenarian lauded by President Barack Obama in his election night speech last year, has died. She was 107.
Obama in his 2008 speech called Cooper an example of "the heartbreak and the hope" of the past century. He noted she was born at a time when women and blacks couldn't vote and lived to cast her ballot for the country's first black president.
In a statement Tuesday, Obama praised Cooper's life of service and offered his condolences. "It is especially meaningful for me that she lived to cast a vote on 2008, and it was a deep honor for me to mark her life in the speech I delivered that night," the statement read. "It was a life that captured the spirit of community and change and progress that is at the heart of the a life that inspired and will continue to inspire me in the years to come."
Carl M. Williams Funeral Directors of Atlanta, which is handling arrangements, confirmed that Cooper died Monday at her southwest Atlanta home on Martin Luther King Jr Drive. She would have turned 108 on Jan. 9.

Theirs had been a fruitful relationship both on- and offscreen.

Any recommendations?

I'm sorry. I don't really have an appropriate Holiday picture to post. I thought I'd spare everyone the Kwanzaa cake.
